A co-worker was hit by a drunk driver.

A co-worker survived being hit by a drunk driver sometime in the past week, I guess. I told him that I was thankful that he survived, and I'm sure that his co-workers, and the patients at the hospital are also appreciative that he survived. I'm unsure what damage his vehicle sustained.

Life is precious. We are given the gift. And when it is done, it can be over like (snap) that.

We should be more appreciative.

Here are more sad disaster stories. Can you see how it tears up families? Can you see how these horrible acts need to be dealt with more severely?

----------------------------------------------------------------
My son was murdered by a drunk driver who at the scene was very combative. He has been out on bail. This past December 8th was my son's first year to be Home. And yet, knowing that does not take the anger away that an ignorant drunk driver took him from me. My baby was just 14. It was no secret, he wanted to be in law enforcement. Twenty years is not alot, but it sure is alot better than what alot of DUI Murderers are getting now.

The "he will change", or "its a sign that he needs help", or "He will change"...what are the gonna change, will my son be back? Will rehab "really" make me feel safe out in the road? How do I know he won't relaps and put me and you in danger again?

I know one thing, I'm not willing to risk it! My baby left, but those that stayed behind suffer everyday. My 13 yr old lost a leg, the other broke his neck, my daughter will for ever his her big brother.

Please! It's time for a change!!!!!!!!!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------

Sad to say but in 2006 my brother Jody Emerson was one 16-18,000 who died at the hands of a drunk driver. Jody was 25 years old, and was such a wonderful young man. The man who killed him will be released from prison on February 19, 2009. He was sentenced to 4 years, but of course only had to serve half of that due to our screwed up justice system. Tiffany is right, the victims do have to suffer from this not only once but twice, and that day of the sentencing hearing was like reliving the night of the crash all over again. It was devastating to my whole family, and this law needs to be changed. Thanks Tif for all of your hard work in getting this started. God bless you.

---------------------------------------------------

This is one change that needs to be supported by EVERYONE. Murdering someone using a motor vehicle is no different than shooting someone or stabbing them. A message needs to be sent to the drunk drivers of the world that their reckless behavior and indifference to human life will not be tolerated by society. The slaps on the wrists to the offenders and slaps in face to the surviors of murdered victims needs to stop. This is a great cause Tif and bless you for getting this going.

------------------------------------------------

Theres no reason why those who kill in a drunk driving accident should be treated any different then if they were to go and murder someone with a gun or knife or any other kind of weapon besides a car......Those who choose to get behind the wheel of a car knowing that they have been drinking and change a family's life forever should suffer the consequences of what they did and give the victum and their family justice even though they can never be brought back......

--------------------------------------------------------

My sister was hit by a drunk 2/23/2007 and died of her injuries 4 days later 2/27/2007 the woman who killed my sister got a year and some fines as well as a 5 year suspended license nothing compared to what my sister got at the age of 20 not to mention what we have to go through without her.
something has got to be done! 20 years minimum for death by DUI first offense or not is a GREAT IDEA!

----------------------------------------------------

My father was killed just over a year ago by a drunk driver, who only got 60 days for the DUI charge and had the aggravated vehicular homicide charge dismissed thanks to the incompetent state patrol who botched the initial investigation at the scene, then refused to take responsibility for their inaction.

My dad was minding his own business, driving a semi for work, just a few minutes into his trip and just a mile from work when this repeat DUI offender went left of center and caused the semi to roll and slam into a tree. Yet the offender walks around free for almost a year, then gets a tiny slap on the wrist.

DUI is a serious matter, and justice needs to come to those who harm others.

-------------------------------------------------

Someone who has been through this. Because of a drunk driver wrecked with my daughter in the car and now has TBI for the rest of her life, i think the sentence should even be more. but anything would be better than is what is now and that is nothing.

-----------------------------------------------
I agree with everything.People should pay for what they do to others.
Thats even in jail for the rest of there life. My grandpal was killed by a drunk drive in 1984,he died at the wreck,my grandmother layed in the hospital for 9 mos,and the guy who hit them walked away free, because he was home on leave from the army. My grandmother didnt know her husband died for 9 mos later. So it seems like the law hasnt changed since then.

There Has to Be Stricter Laws and Stiffer Penalties

***IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO SUMMER IS ... SHE IS AN 8 YEAR OLD WHO WAS KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER .. AND APPARENTLY, HER MURDERER HAS NOT SERVED MORE THAN A SINGLE F'N DAY IN JAIL??? THIS ANGERS ME BEYOND WORDS ... BELOW IS A POST FROM HER NANA***

I am so upset today for a multitude of reasons... I can barely write through the tears! I called the prosectors office this morning to just "check" to make sure the system was working and that Stacy was indeed serving her 5 days each month...
I didn't get to speak to the prosecutor so I called the jail...

The drunk who killed Summer has served ONE day in jail on October 26, 2008 she showed up signed in and the next morning the order came to let her go... She has not spent any more time in jail! Apparently the judge changed the order! I will confirm that once I talk to the prosecutor...

MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE POINT IN EVEN HAVING A TRIAL OR AGREEMENT IF A JUDGE WHO APPARENTLY HAS SOMETHING AGANIST OUR FAMILY CAN SIMPLY CHANGE IT!

THE GUY AT THE JAIL KNEW EXACTLY WHO I WAS ASKING ABOUT... HE TOLD ME SHE SHOWED UP AND SAID THE JUDGE TOLD HER SHE JUST HAD TO SIGN IN & LEAVE!!!!!! I WAS CRYING AND UPSET AND TOLD HIMI WHAT HAPPENED... HE SAID HE WAS SORRY AND THAT SHE BELONGED IN PRISON!

I NEED HELP... ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYONE WHO CAN HELP ME GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS & HELP ME GET JUSTICE FOR SUMMER PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

I AM NOT A HATEFUL PERSON... I DON'T WANT STACY TO DIE FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE, BUT IF THERE IS NO CONSEQUENCE FOR THE ACTIONS OF KILLING SUMMER, SHE WILL DO IT AGAIN! WHY NOT!!!!!... THERE IS ANOTHER FAMILY THAT WILL CROSS HER PATH AND SOME OTHER INNOCENT LIFE COULD BE LOST BECAUSE NO ONE IN THE SYSTEM CARED ENOUGH ABOUT MY SUMMER TO STOP THIS DRUNK!

I HONESTLY CAN'T BREATH, MY HEART HURTS ALL OVER AGAIN AND I FEEL LIKE I HAVE HAD MY HEART RIPPED OUT OF MY CHEST AND STOMPED ON!

THERE ARE SO MANY OTHERS ON HERE WHO HAVE HAD NO JUSTICE, AND THAT IS A DRIVING FORCE TO SAY THE LEAST, BUT PLEASE HELP ME FIND A WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! i FEEL LOST IN A BIG BAD SYSTEM THAT PROTECTS THE QUILTY!

IF NOTHING ELSE PLEASE PRAY FOR ME, BECAUSE HONESTLY, THIS IS A BLOW THAT IS GOING TO BE HARD TO RECOVER FROM! I WORKED HARD FOR 2 YEARS TO GET SOMETHING RESEMBLING JUSTICE, JUST TO BE KICKED IN THE FACE BY THIS JUDGE!!! REMAINING ANGRY IS JUSTIFIED AND IT SPURS ME TO ACTION... BUT I DON'T WANT TO BECOME BITTER!

please repost maybe someone you know can help me!!!!!!! I am willing to do anything to change DRUNK DRIVING laws... I have a lot of talent, a BIG mouth, and a passion for justice... I want to not only do this for Summer but for every single vicitm out there! My heart hurts for all of YOU!!! *SOBS*

If has been one year today and My prayers go out to the family and friends!!!

Think Before You Drink

The hurt, the misery,
the agony, the pain
It wasn't for naught,
don't let the heartbreak be in vain

The comments and pics on myspace,
the stories in the Toledo Blade
Looking and wondering in disbelief,
of what was the minivan made?

Stunned and shocked at all of the damage
which their vehicle substained
Distraught and heartbroken for the victims,
whom as a result to rest were lain

A picture is worth a thousand words
is how the saying goes
Seeing the faces of the mother and children,
touched many, only God knows

Their deaths just ohhh so senseless,
that's what most do think
Five precious lives lost instantly,
because a young man choose to drink

Celebrating the holidays with his family,
with 08 soon to begin
Not thinking that his festive indulgence
would result in a most tragic end

Its known that alcohol can blur one's vision
and your judgement it will impair
It'll make you say and do some things,
which normally, you wouldn't dare

Like driving on the expressway late at night,
headed in the wrong direction
And crashing into a family loaded mini van,
before your brain can made a correction

People tried to stop him at Taco Bell,
where he stopped briefly after leaving the bar
Brave citizens dutifully called 911,
knowing this man shouldn't be driving a car

The police arrived at the scene within minutes,
but the driver had already taken flight
An irrational decision which he did make,
on that cold, gloomy dreadful night

He drove a few miles down the road
but still he didn't have a clue
You shouldn't be driving towards other motorist,
their headlights urgently dodging you

Frightened drivers swerving frantically,
calling the police fast as they can
To tell of a pick up truck being driven,
by a confused and mixed up man

A loving family headed home after Christmas,
having not long hugged their kin
Who was to think that those warm "Goodbyes",
would become treasured memories .. for hearts to mend?

Out of the blue the black truck appeared,
in the dark of that fatal night
The driver so consumed with alcohol,
he didn't know which way was right

And then the unthinkable happened,
like a moment in the twilight zone
A desparate swerve trying to avoid the collision,
in a blink - half the family was gone

The impact crushed the front of the van,
the right side ripped totally away
Mom fatally injured from the stabbing metal,
helpless children thrown violently astray

What a horrible scene it must to have been,
small bodies scattered about in the street
And ohhh how ones' heart had to drop,
seeing a newborn in a damaged carseat

Less than eight minutes, that's all that it took,
from call one to this awful conclusion
Four fatalities announced there on the scene,
failed attempts to save the baby with contusions

Other family members - seriously injured,
will recover from their physical pain
But the scars left on the their broken hearts
will forever and always remain

Shocked and anquished souls cry out,
wanting to know the whats and the whys
But its tough to hear the sought out answers
through the much warranted heartfelt cries

The drunk driver received minor physical injuries,
complaining of pain in the face and the jaw
Oblivious to the fact that he had killed five people,
or the price he'll pay for breaking the law

Treated and released from the hospital the next day,
then booked into Lucas County Jail
Five counts of aggravated vehicular homicide,
his life is now a torturing living hell

This poem is a message to drinkers that drive,
it should be one of driver's ed required reads
Its not to pass judgement on the young man's action,
for sure he'll pay dearly for his deeds

So please take heed to this sad, sad story,
let it sink in your heart, mind and soul
May it stir up your emotions and make you remember this event
that is my one most wanted -desired goal

This statement won't sit right with all
it hurts so much the way they went
I'm sure most know within their heart,
that homicide was not the man's intent

The hype that alcohol brings happiness and joy
is the lie that advertisers give
When indeed alcohol is a potent depressant,
with remorseful pain he'll now have to live

My wish is that this poem reaches many,
I'll be content if it change just a few
If it prevents another tragedy such as this
I'll feel I got my point through

So please think before you drink and then drive
It can save you and others so much strife
The world need to learn from this harsh wake up call
Choosing sobriety can save someone's life.

Mandatory Minimum Sentencing of 20 to Life For Murdering While DUI

Drinking and driving is pre-meditated murder, and needs to be treated as such in the justice system. Everyone knows drinking and driving is illegal, yet they still make the decision to do it regardless. Often times drunk drivers end up killing innocent people, this happens between 16,000 and 17,000 times a year. Drinking and driving is not an accident. When a drunk driver kills a person they get sentenced to maybe three years and only serve half - then they get released only to drink and drive again on our roadways. A mandatory minimum sentence of 20 to life is the least the justice system can do for the innocent victims and their families.

There Are Millions of Deaths Per Year Caused by Drivers Who Are Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs.

Think about it. You are sitting there at night, waiting for your son or daughter to come home from work, school, or a football game. You get a phone call. It is a police officer, telling you that there has been an accident, and your child has been killed. You find out that alcohol has been the culprit; the driver of the car that killed your child was drinking that night, and got behind the wheel in an impaired condition. What would your reaction be??

This happens every 15 seconds of the day. A young person gets behind the wheel of a car and either kills somebody or gets killed himself or herself. A family is torn apart. Friends are devastated. Those left behind are wondering why.

It has been proposed that there be mandatory sentences for murdering anyone during a DUI, of 20 years to life, but is this even stiff enough? When they get out, what will they do? Have they learned anything?
